David Gaines
Professional Church Organist Services in Hampshire
David is a freelance organist available for church service work including weddings and funerals, choir training and conducting. He is also an experienced accompanist and ensemble pianist.
David is a Graduate of the Royal Marines School of Music where he studied Trumpet and Cornet with eminent brass band conductor, Prof. Walter B Hargreaves and Piano and Organ with David Squibb, of Trinity Boys Choir fame, and Ross Anderson FRCO. Whilst serving as a musician in the Royal Marines David travelled extensively and had the privilege of playing at many prestigious venues and events. Whilst stationed in Singapore, David’s duties included service as Organist at the Naval Base Parish Church.
Since leaving the Royal Marines he has been extensively involved in church music and was for many years’ organist and choirmaster at Drayton Methodist Church. Whilst in that position David and the choir broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and also on local radio stations and was also actively involved twice on BBC Songs of Praise. The choir under David’s direction were also successful at local choir and music festivals. David is also regularly invited to play the 1895 Mauracher organ in the Parish Church in Oberau, Austria when he visits the area.
Additional to liturgical work, David also spent a period as Musical Director of the Solent Male Voice Choir taking that choir to success in contest and concerts as well as conducting local church choirs at an Annual Easter concert in Portsmouth. He also sang for many years as a chorister with the Portsmouth Choral Union and currently participates in Really Big Chorus performances at the Royal Albert Hall also in Salzburg and Cologne and most recently in Vienna where he sang at the annual concert commemorating the date and hour of Mozart’s death. He also sang in the chorus for the EMI recording at Abbey Wood studios of Karl Jenkins’ ‘Peacemakers’ with the composer conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.
More recently, David freelances as organist for a number of churches within the Portsmouth area and also regularly plays at local crematoria.
